Audition to be in an episode!

We are not currently auditioning any parts. More to follow, so keep checking back!

We’d like you to record these sections in the environment you would record the actual episodes, and with the equipment you would use. Please note that this is because one of the things we will be considering with your audition is audio quality. This includes, but isn’t limited to, mic quality, background noise, and compression rate. (So, if you have access, now’s the time to finagle usage of that fancy uni recording equipment!)

In case you are intimidated by this, PLEASE DON’T BE! ALMOST ANYONE WILLING TO ACT COULD VERY WELL BE ACCOMMODATED. Show us what you've got, and we'll work with you on sound quality and time. Those are factors to think about, but what we're looking for is a great performance. Don't let the fact that you don't currently have a foam-lined podfic bunker lying around keep you down/stop you auditioning! The techy bits you’ll be expected to deal with are pie-easy once you get the hang of them, we swear. We save the true descent into hell for the editors...

PLEASE LET US KNOW:

* Your contact info. (Minimum we need is an email address, but feel free to provide Skype, AIM, etc.)
* A little about your acting experience. Have you taken direction before? Your experience level is not a make or break factor in our casting decisions, but it’s helpful to know about.
* How much time can you commit to this project? We’ll try to give you an idea of what the role demands--some parts are simply one or two lines, other episodes will feature non-main actors about as heavily as they do the mains. This will be strung out over a while (up to a few weeks, maybe even more), but you would need to be able to find time for that, and possibly at odd hours, as your director may opt for ‘live’ i.e. simultaneous recordings. The schedule will be as amenable to you as possible, but if you don’t have much free time or flexibility, a large role may not be for you.
* Would you be willing to do future series?
* As mentioned above, if necessary, would you be willing to purchase a better mic? How much would you be willing to spend? (Keep in mind that a decent headset mic usually runs $15-25, and a VERY nice standing USB condenser mic runs around $100.)
* Can you do any ‘voices’ or ‘accents’ we should know about? This includes your fiercest Ssssssssea Devil, and so on. Some of the alien qualities of these voices are down to post-production, but the bulk is voice work. Watch Nick Briggs live--I hope he sometimes does this voice in public while ordering pancakes, just to terrify near-by children.
* What time-zone do you live in? (This cannot affect your chances, it’s just a planning question.)

FEEL FREE TO USE THIS CONVENIENT TEMPLATE:

Upload to something like Tindeck, Box.net, or Mediafire, and post in the comments OR email to radiosonicworkshop [at] gmail [dot] com. All comments are screened – due to the nature of LJ’s screening function we won’t reply to these comments, but actors will have our thanks and will be contacted as we need them. GIVEN THE PRODUCTION SCHEDULE, IT MAY BE SOME TIME BEFORE WE CONTACT YOU REGARDING OUR BURNING NEED FOR A SILURIAN OR SOME SUCH.

Hm. When is the deadline for the auditions? Because I'd love to try out, but I don't think I can do anything until after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Good point. At the moment they're 'until further notice', but the sooner you can get things in the better. We're not going to close this set for at least a week/two weeks, though, and we'll certainly warn before that's going to happen.

Bess (I assume you are reading this - hello!) can you or Mi assign a closing date that seems reasonable with our prospective recording times, and update this post. (Now now - just... before it becomes necessary). Thanks!

Thanks. It's just very hard to record with lots of people around... and Thanksgiving always means lots of people. ^_^;;;;

I am definetly interested in auditioning. I have done some audio work in the past. If you like I can get you a link to where you can download the show on iTunes. I'm from the American south. I can do a decent British accent as well. I have a USB mike. What software do you recommend for recording?

We're largely using Audacity, which is very easy to use and free! Let me or Bess know if you have any problems with it/anything else.

Hello! Just wondering how the audition piece recording was going. We're starting to try and cast the American episode, so it would be great to have your audition pieces to consider. If LJ is down you can send them to our gmail account: radiosonicworkshop@gmail.com

Thanks!

Soooo, I'm thinking of auditioning, as you've mentioned a need for people with American accents. But, I do not have a mic other than the one that's built-in to my computer. Should I bother trying to audition in that case?

definitely audition! if we think you're right for the part, we've got a lovely person who will talk to you about buying a mic for less than $10 or about the many places you might have a non-built in mic lying around the house...

That's great, because I broke out my USB mic and it's not recording at any usable volume on playback. Do you think a headset would work better? Because if not I might have to dig out my sister's Rock Band USB mic.

Argh - I wrote a reply, but LJ has eaten it.

The crux of the matter is: anything that records a sound that we can hear is good for now. We can judge how good your mics are later (though the Rock Band one may be fine as it doesn't pick up the computer noise, and that is apparently the main thing).

Okay, I'll give both a try.

I'm sorry - I've been working a project that needs to be finished in the next few days. (I did fiddle with the Rock Band mic, and it sounds all right. Now if I can only get past the "I'm my own worst critic" issues.) Hopefully I can get everything finished tonight and finish up the audacity files for you.

...I need to keep better track of things.

If I'm okay with any and all sized rolls, should I just record all the audition lines that work with my accent and gender? Also, when is the recording going to take place? From now through the second week of January or so I'm going to be pretty much free, but after that I'll be starting my last semester of grad school. January would probably still be fine for me, maybe even February, but beyond that point I would be wise to take a smaller role if any.

Going to record my audition tomorrow, hopefully.

brilliant! and thanks for coming over for the non-ghost audition.

the recording will hopefully take place in january, but it might stretch into late january - depending on everyone else's availability. for most of these roles you won't be needed for more than about 5 hours actual recording time, and probably much less.

Sooooooooo, I haven't heard back about anything. I'm assuming that means that the links did work.

I'm aware you guys are busy, so that's perfectly fine. I was just curious to know if there was a round about date that we'd know by?

Hello! Sorry it's taken me a while to reply, but I wanted to tell you something definitive, and then ages had gone by and I thought, well, I should probably say something.

We're still in the process of casting the American episode, but hopefully we'll have finalised all the main and medium parts by the end of January so we can do recording. Some people have been contacted already, but they are few and far between.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

Hi! I've only just found out about this and would like to wish you luck in this endevour. Universe needs more Shalka!
If for the future episodes you'll need someone with a foreign accent (Russian in my case), I'd be very happy to audition.
