sooo -
actually first: does anyone know why we got star trek and iron man 3 so much earlier than the US? it's really weird.
but anyway - it's out in america, now, right? so probably your f-lists will just be full of other/better reaction posts. but here's my reaction post to 'into darkness'.
quick version: generally - i liked it. but a) i did like it less than the first one, which i loved, and b) i don't have a strong attachment to TOS (yet). erin does, and she liked STID (incidentally, has anyone commented how the name looks like another popular acronym?) a lot, and also disliked it a lot for 'stealing lots of TOS but doing it worse' reasons.
in conclusion: i say - see it! because it is fun. i do have some more thoughts, but not too many. (probably).
( more thoughtsCollapse )

soooooo - star trek fans: i am watching this 'original series' that i've heard so much about. and funnily enough, although i really nothing-ed 'the naked time', which for ages was the only episode i'd seen (along with 'the motion picture'), i am really liking it thus far. much more than that DS9... so: will get back on the star trek reviewing horse!
on a similar note - looking forward (with some trepidation due to rumours) to 'into darkness'!
on a not similar note - i got my hair cut yesterday (hurrah!). and a) the very nice gay guy who cut my hair told me i looked way younger than i actually am, which for some reason is a thing i am vaguely turning over in my mind still. maybe i should wear shoes that aren't converse or something. particularly when it's raining. many people iknow am friends with on facebook have babies... but i don't think they look older than me.
also b) - even though it was ok this time and my hairdresser was actually quite nice, i was once again reminded of my potential gift to humanity idea: nerd hairdressing, viz you can choose a hairdresser who shares your interests, and thus can talk to them about captain america, or whatever, while you get your hair cut, rather than where you're going on your holidays/what your job is/or - in the case of my most recent hair cut - public transport (but i genuinely have feelings on this topic...).
erin, my own personal avon, pointed out that this idea was innately flawed because she'd prefer to have her hair cut by someone enquiring about recent holidays that by someone wanted to talk about river song... i think it would be a bit difficult to make sure people had compatible interests within a particular fandom, but. still... i genuinely think the idea has potential.
and i did want to be a hairdresser or a musketeer when i was young...
and being a musketeer hasn't worked out for me yet...
on a different different note - i found out today that AO3 has a history feature! (i realise they weren't exactly hiding it, but i never clicked on it). this is all i have ever wanted. no need to bookmark things you've read - it records eeeeeverything. now nothing will ever be lost again. and i might now remember to go back and comment on things.
basically - i am excited.

I'm eating lunch almost an hour early I AM AN ANARCHIST
Yay lists!
Regency Dress
Less than a week to go!
Have pics to post~ later. I have one more layer to hem, the evil layer, then just button holes and buttons and the dress is done! Then finishing trimming the shoes, which I’ve been taking pics of sooo post those later. And then making a reticule/purse :D I wanted to do a particular kind because I wanted to mimic a pattern on my sleeves but I can’t figure out how to do the piping the way I want to so I may end up doing something else...
Fanime
Is the week after!
I’ll be most of the time in the artist alley helping out some friends, I don’t have a table number, but please come check us out!
I’ll be:
- Rikuou from Gouhou Drug/Lawful Drug/Legal Drug/Drug & Drop (... I just call it Drug at this point), which is awesome because it’s civvies plus an apron, a wig, and a moody expression.
- Count D from Petshop of Horrors, I maaaay bust out something new at the last minute, but if not, I made this costume back in 2005 (which was a bit sad because we had a sizable group, but a communications mishap and I never met up w/ the rest of the people ;_;). I’m really excited because I’ll have a Leon this time :D
- Maybe! Subaru from X/1999. I loooove Subaru so I’m never opposed to wearing it. But I favour the covered in blood version, which may not be best for sitting in AA... >.>
Post Fanime
The next event is a Victorian bustle picnic, which I haven’t even started sooo we’ll see. Then Comic Con, then Costume College. I really want to make some more just clothes, but we’ll see. Also! Post Fanime I really hope to work on my website :D AJ coded and made it beautiful and awesome and I haven’t even touched it yet ;_;

fellow 'rivers of london' readers may know that today was the annual may fayre and puppet festival in covent garden. i've worked in covent garden for three years now and i ain't never heard of it, so they can't advertise it that well, but it was heaving. it was also a very nice event - if you like puppet shows. if not, i guess there's not much for you, but if we'd stayed a bit later we could have enjoyed some may pole dancing as well (and there were definitely queens of the may/pearly queens hanging around) as the 15 or so staggered punch & judy performances.
mostly what we did (apart from watch one and half p&j shows) was... go to church. and it was a real church service, rather than a bizarre punch & judy lead service (although the latter is what i thought i was going to see due to misleading marketing about 'mr punch taking to the pulpit', until we approached the church and saw actual vicars there). it was quite interesting, though, because the whole service was designed around the punch & judy festivities, with the vicar (an ex-puppeteer himself) periodically blessing all those in the performing arts (and specifically blessing all the punch & judy puppets at the end)... and there was a brass band (from the earlier and surprisingly small-scale parade that erin and i got accidentally caught up in for its final stretch) in the church. it was also interesting for erin, as someone who'd never gone to a british church ceremony (or seen a punch & judy show). her verdict (on the church service) seems to be that it was surprisingly short (it was 50 minutes) and that everyone was very nice. apparently the guy standing next to me, who knew all the hymns, was wearing a gandalf t-shirt, but i did not notice.
i took some photos but they didn't come out all that brilliantly. still - you might be interested! they are below the cut.
( that's the way to do it!Collapse )

the lovely
lost_spook is running a comment fest (as an alternative birthday party! v cool idea - it's open to everyone, provided you like things that are british and that a relatively small number of other people also like. make prompts, fill prompts, etc. i am definitely going to do the first...

speaking of relatively obscure fandoms... in the last few days i've used my rapidly expiring lovefilm account to watch morethings with paul darrow in them adaptations of robin hood!
now, my sensibilities were in large part shaped by 'the princess bride' movie, so obviously i love errol flynn, who is basically the original cary elwes (so good casting there, 'men in tights'). but his robin hood is fantastically annoying, which is a shame because i want to love him (and he has the most ridiculous tights), and his marian's pretty good, and basil rathbone is adorably delgado-y. but basically - even though it is only an hour and a half long and there are sword fight and stuff and it's a massively important movie classic... it's somehow a bit of a drag.
but for some reason this didn't stop us watching the douglas fairbanks 'robin hood'. which is, i think, the first silent movie i have actually watched, so it was thus really really surreal. actually - i think it would be a bit surreal anyway... but it was particularly surreal. quite fun, though. and only partly because the fact that it was a silent movie meant that we could substitute most of the dialogue for the characters (not all of it was 'no, no, no!' 'YES, YES, YES'... but a lot of it was). everyone looks like they're out of a pre-raphelite painting and there's a strang subplot about richard trying to make robin into a heterosexual.
but anyway - i feel i now understand the mythos of robin hood a bit better. which is exciting.
and i also kind of want silent movie versions of other things - silent movie!avengers, silent movie!blake's 7, silent movie!legend of robin hood. because that's a comedy device that keeps giving.
in relatively non-obscure fandom news: i watched doctor who 'a nightmare in silver' and... it wasn't very good. it wasn't offensive or anything*, but it wasn't very good. and after 'the doctor's wife' i'd hoped it would be. quite a few nice moments, though. and a good clara.
*actually,
professor_spork has written a very good thing about why it is (and there's a link to a tumblr post that has more). whihc is a shame. because disliking 'doctor who' for this sort of reason makes me sad and tired.

Not much to say but I am trying to post more.
In one-on-one therapy on Monday my therp and I agreed that I would try to eat lunch at the same time every day, to start getting a little more routine going. I spaced it Tuesday, remembered Wednesday, and I have about an hour to go today.
Did a good thing this morning, went to the 7-11. Got some stuff to drink (they still have a sale on 2 2liters of Coke, and I got a 6-pack of that Jack Daniels brand cooler) and some cake balls. I'd meant to get some Kool Whip but I forgot.
Got kind of serious with my caseworker yesterday. Pointed out to him that my being so cooperative and understanding even though he's really flaky isn't because I don't need his help, it's because I am too anxious to make waves and scared to speak up for myself.
So that's life right now. The cats love playing with the laser pointer so I am trying to do that more.

Edited more pics last night!
And I'm still more ahead than this, but yay.
